Program Description
The 1,800-hour Industrial Drafting DVS program covers 25 competencies. During the program, you will develop the skills required to solve industrial drafting problems, take and interpret measurements, and understand the manufacturing process.
It is important to distinguish between a designer and a drafter. A designer diagrams mechanical parts, creating the overall drawings for assembly and detail. A drafter, also known as a draftsperson, a drafting technologist, a drafting technician or a computer-assisted drafting (CAD) technician, improves or adapts existing products in addition to designing new ones, or may lead projects . A designer may work in the field for a few years before becoming a drafter.
Choosing a career in drafting means deciding to work with leading-edge technology. It also means acquiring detailed knowledge in a variety of specialties across a range of sectors and skills in the use of many different advanced software applications, such as AutoCAD.
Graduates of our Industrial Drafting program will be qualified to prepare technical designs, drawings and related information as part of multidisciplinary engineering teams or in support of engineers, architects or industrial designers, or they may work independently.

Main Job Operations
Develop and prepare engineering designs and drawings from preliminary concepts, sketches, engineering calculations, specification sheets and other data
Operate computer-assisted design (CAD) and drafting workstations
Develop and prepare design sketches
Complete documentation packages and produce drawing sets
Check and verify design drawings to conform to specifications and design data
Write technical reports
Prepare contracts and tender documents
Prepare construction specifications, costs and material estimates
Supervise and train other technologists, technicians and drafters.
Drafting technicians perform some or all of the following duties:
Develop and prepare engineering drawings, plans, diagrams or layouts from sketches.
Operate computer-assisted drafting equipment or a conventional drafting station.
