Programs and courses

What programs does Aviron offer?
Aviron offers five Ministry-recognized DEP (Diploma of Vocational Studies) programs: Electricity, Automobile Mechanics, Welding-Assembly, IT Support and Industrial Drafting. We also offer two in-house courses for focused, hands-on training: General Welding and Vehicle Mechanics. See all programs.
What is the difference between a DEP and an in-house course?
A DEP is a Ministry-recognized program that leads to a diploma awarded by the Minister, and it is eligible for Québec government student financial aid (AFE). An in-house course is a shorter, focused course that leads to an Aviron Attestation of Achievement; the Vehicle Mechanics attestation is recognized by the CPA. In-house courses are not eligible for AFE.
Are Aviron's programs recognized by the Québec Ministry?
Yes. Aviron is permitted by the Ministère de l'Éducation du Québec to issue five Ministry-recognized DEPs: Électricité (5295) / Electricity (5795), Mécanique automobile (5298) / Automobile Mechanics (5798), Soudage-assemblage (5382) / Welding-Assembly (5882), Soutien informatique (5385) / IT Support (5885), and Dessin industriel (5225) / Industrial Drafting (5725). Each DEP leads to a diploma awarded by the Minister. Program codes can be verified on Inforoute FPT.
Why do the French and English programs have different codes?
In Québec, the English version of a DEP has its own code. For example, Électricité is 5295 and Electricity, its English version, is 5795.
Are classes taught in French or in English?
Both. All our DEP programs and in-house courses are taught in French and in English, depending on the cohort; the calendar shows the language of each start date. At this time, RAC services are offered in French only.
Are there day and evening classes?
Yes. Aviron offers day and evening cohorts. Schedules depend on the program and the start date; see the Available Intakes section of each program page or the calendar.
How long is a DEP program?
Our DEPs are 1,800-hour programs. Most run between 12 and 24 months, depending on the schedule (day or evening) and the pace.
Can I study online?
Industrial Drafting is offered online or in person. Our other programs are taught on campus, in our workshops.
What do I receive at the end of an in-house course?
General Welding leads to an Aviron Attestation of Achievement. Vehicle Mechanics leads to an Attestation of Achievement recognized by the CPA (Comité paritaire de l'industrie des services automobiles de la région de Montréal): this 600-hour course leads to 597 hours accredited by the CPA Montréal, which apply to your apprenticeship card.
When can I start an in-house course?
Vehicle Mechanics has continuous entry: new students start every month, as soon as their file is complete. General Welding starts on set dates; see the calendar.

Admissions

How do I apply?
For a DEP, you can apply online through the MyAviron admission portal, or our admissions team can guide you. For an in-house course, use the Enroll button on the course page. Questions? Contact admissions.
What documents do I need as a local student?
Proof of identity (long-form birth certificate in French or English and your SIN card; if you were born abroad, also a citizenship certificate, permanent resident card or CSQ), proof of studies (for example a DES, or a transcript showing Secondary IV English, French and Math), and a valid copy of your passport with signature. The full list is on the Local Students page.
How long does it take to get an answer?
Once we have received all the required documents and your file is complete, you will receive an acceptance letter within 7 to 10 days.
Can international students apply?
Yes. Aviron has a dedicated international admissions team. You will need your birth certificate, your diploma and transcripts with a certified translation if they are not in French or English, your passport, proof of language proficiency and a 12-month bank statement. See the International Students page for the full checklist.
What do I need after I am admitted as an international student?
First obtain your Québec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ) for studies. Once the CAQ is confirmed, apply for your study permit and, if your internship is off campus, a co-op work permit. You must have both the CAQ and the study permit before the program starts, and send copies to the school before your first day. All international students must also have health insurance for the whole program.

Start dates

When is the next start date?
Every upcoming start date is on our calendar, which you can filter by program and language, and on the Upcoming Courses page. The Ministry's Inforoute FPT site also lists the groups for our 5460 campus and our 5490 campus.

Tuition and financial aid

How much does a program cost?
Tuition is different for each program, and you are informed of the final cost before you sign your contract. Our admissions team can tell you the cost of the program you are interested in. Financing is available: DEP programs are eligible for AFE loans and bursaries from the Québec government, and in-house courses can be financed through our partner programs, including instalment plans for qualifying students. See the financial aid questions below and Financial Services.
Is financial aid available?
Yes, for DEP programs. They are eligible for the Québec government's Aide financière aux études (AFE): loans and bursaries are available depending on eligibility criteria such as family income, dependants and residency status. To be eligible, you must among other things be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident or a protected person, live in Québec and study full time. Our financial services office helps you with the application; processing usually takes six to eight weeks. See Financial Services.
Can I get financial aid for an in-house course?
In-house courses are not eligible for AFE, but Aviron offers financing options through partner programs, including instalment plans for qualifying students. Speak with our admissions office about the options.
I live in another province. Am I eligible for AFE?
Students from other Canadian provinces are not eligible for Québec's Loans and Bursaries Program, but they may be eligible for financial assistance from their home province.
How can I pay my tuition?
By credit card (Visa, Mastercard), debit card, cash, personal cheque, certified cheque, bank draft, money order or pre-authorized payment; foreign students can also pay by international wire transfer. You receive a detailed invoice in your first week of studies.
Is there funding for veterans?
If you have at least six years of service, you could be eligible for funding from Veterans Affairs Canada. See Financial Services.

Recognition of acquired competencies (RAC)

What is RAC?
Recognition of acquired competencies (RAC) lets adults who have gained skills through work experience or informal training have them officially recognized, without redoing the entire training program.
Which programs and who is eligible?
RAC is available for Électricité (DEP 5295) and Mécanique automobile (DEP 5298), for Canadian citizens and permanent residents. At this time, RAC services are offered in French only.
How does it work and what does it cost?
You submit an application, your file is analyzed, you attend a validation interview, you complete theoretical and practical evaluations, and you receive official recognition. Fees: $200 to open your file, $1,000 for RAC support, $150 per competency, and complementary training if needed (cost varies). See RAC.
